He founded the Oakland Female Institute in Norristown, which grew to some note, which drew students from every state in the Union, as well as Canada, Cuba, Great Britain, Germany, Greece and others. James attributed much of his success to his wife, who supported him in all of his endeavors. James Ralston died on November 10, 1880. Anna Ralston died on December 27, 1891.
