Thomas was a brakeman on a shifting engine of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. He lost his right leg above the knee while attempting to board a moving passenger train at Ninth & Thompson Streets. The train would have taken him home. His brother, William, was a conductor on the same train. Joseph was taken to Pennsylvania Hospital where his leg was amputated. He died there from complications from the injury.
